First Craps Key

The first craps key that players should understand are the probability, odds and number of possible dice combinations for each of the available numbers in craps. Since there are two dice with numbers that range from one to six, there are 36 different possible (6×6) outcomes when the dice are rolled.

Craps Key: Possible Dice Combinations Probability and Odds

  • On number 7 for example, there are 6 different ways that a 7 can be rolled. The probability is then 6 out of 36 that the number rolled will be a 7. This equates to 5 to 1 odds that a 7 is rolled.
  • The number 11 can be rolled in 2 different ways, which equals a 2 out of 36 probability and a 17 to 1 odds.
  • For beginners, it is easier to understand the probability than it is to understand the odds.

Second Craps Key

The second key is understanding the winning and losing craps bet numbers and probability on the come-out roll.

Most guides clump together all the various bets and payouts into one large chart. But to thoroughly understand the game you must first have a solid understanding of the two most popular bets on the craps table: the Pass Line and Don’t Pass bets. When players first start to play, it is best to stick with these two bets until you have watched the game play and understand what happens after the come-out roll is won, lost or carried forward when a point is established.

Pass Line Bets: Probabilities on the Come-Out Roll

  • On the come out roll, the probability that a 7 or 11 will be rolled is 8 out of 36 [(6/32)+(2/36)=(8/36)]. This would result in a win for a bet on the pass line.
  • A pass line bet would lose on the come-out roll if a 2,3 or 12 is rolled. The probability of that occurring is 4 out of 36 [(1/36)+(2/36)+(1/36)=(4/36)].

Don’t Pass Line Bets: Probabilities on the Come-Out Roll

  • On the come out roll, the probability that a 2 or 3 will be rolled is 3 out of 36 [(1/36)+(2/36)=(3/36)]. This would result in a win for a bet on the don’t pass line.
  • A don’t pass bet would lose on the come-out roll if a 7 or 11 is rolled. The probability of that occurring is 8 out of 36 [(6/36)+(2/36)=(8/36)].
  • A don’t pass bet would tie on the come-out roll if a 12 is rolled. The probability of that occurring is 1 out of 36 .

If neither the pass nor the don’t pass line bets win or lose on the come-out roll, there more opportunities to lose or win each bet once a point is established.

When 7 Becomes Your Enemy

Yes, even for a pass line bet, the number 7 can turn from friend to enemy.

During the come-out roll, a 7 (or 11) is a pass line bets best friend. There are 6 possible dice combinations that will result in 7. That is more than any other number. A person could believe that if you want to win, that you should always bet on anything where a 7 is involved.

However, 6 out of 36 different dice combinations is only 1/6 of the total possible outcomes. So there are still plenty of other ways that the game can go. Then, after the the come-out roll, a 7 (or 11) is a pass line bets worst enemy. There are now 6 out of 36 different ways that a pass line bet can lose. The reverse is also true for a don’t pass bet. During the come-out roll, a 7 (or 11) is a don’t pass bets worst friend. But if you survive the come-out roll, a a 7 (or 11) is now your best friend. This flip flop of allegiance is what make craps confusing to beginners. But it also acts to result in a identical payouts of 1 to 1 for a win on the pass line and don’t pass bets.

Pass Line vs Don’t Pass on the Come-out Roll

Oddly enough, the house edge for the don’t pass bet is slightly better than the pass line bet (it is actually due to the influence of the 12). Even so, some guides suggest placing a pass line bet instead of the don’t pass bet.

  • They do this because they know that during the come-out roll, you more likely to win a pass line bet on a 7 or 11 than you are to lose on a 2,3 or 12.
  • Likewise, during the come-out roll, you more likely to lose a don’t pass bet on a 7 or 11 than you are to win on a 2 or 3.
